Know your Liver

Liver is the largest internal organ of the body that has two main lobes made up of tiny lobules. It is located in the upper right portion of the abdomen protected by the rib cage. It is also considered a gland because it makes and secretes bile. Liver is involved in over 500 different functions including digestion, metabolism, nutrients' storage and removal of toxins. Liver has a remarkable regenerative capacity and ability to heal itself as it is the only organ in the body that can easily replace damaged cells. However, if enough cells are lost, the liver may not be able to meet the needs of the body.

Important Liver Functions

Production of bile that is required in the digestion of food, particularly in fats

Storing of the extra glucose or sugar as glycogen, and then converting it back into glucose when the body needs it for energy

  Production of blood clotting factors

Production of amino acids (the building blocks for making proteins), including those used to help fight infection

The processing and storage of iron necessary for red blood cell production

Manufacture of cholesterol and other chemicals required for fat transport

Conversion of waste products of body metabolism into urea that is excreted in the urine

Metabolizing medications into their active ingredient in the body

What causes Liver Diseases?

It is widely believed that the only thing that damages a liver is excess alcohol consumption. Not true. There are many other unhealthy practices through which liver is abused and we unknowingly invite life-threatening liver complications and diseases such as fatty liver and liver cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is a term that describes permanent scarring of the liver. In cirrhosis, the normal liver cells are replaced by scar tissue that cannot perform any liver function.

Following are the causes of various liver diseases:

Consumption of alcohol: Excess alcohol compels the liver to divert from its other functions and focus mainly on converting alcohol to a less toxic form. When liver absorbs alcohol it causes fatty liver disease, inflammation of the liver and cirrhosis.

Overuse of medications: Overuse of OTC drugs and prescription medicines such as pain killers, antidepressants, mood stabilizers and anti-inflammation are known to cause liver damage. Self-medication, multiple medications, excels intake of Vitamin A and also treatment through multiple alternative therapy can cause significant liver complications.

Diabetes: Diabetes increases the risk of liver disease by 50%. People with diabetes due to insulin resistance have high levels of insulin in their blood, which triggers abdominal weight gain. This causes the liver to store fat internally, causing fatty liver disease.

Viral Hepatitis A, B and C and autoimmune hepatitis attack the liver cells directly causing inflammation. Without proper treatment, hepatitis can cause cirrhosis of the liver (hardening and scarring of liver tissue) and may gradually lead to liver failure.

Tuberculosis: Although clinically silent, TB can affect the liver once the bacteria causing tuberculosis gains entry into the liver and colonize it. In an attempt to fight infection, the liver responds to colonizing bacteria, leading to a tumor formation. This condition is called as hepatic tuberculosis.

Obesity: In obese people who have excess body fat which tends to accumulate around the liver causes fatty liver disease. Obesity is also linked to cirrhosis of liver and liver failure.

Smoking: Although smoking has no direct impact on liver, the harmful chemicals in smoke increase the oxidative stress, causing irreversible damaging to the liver cells.

High salt intake: High salt intake is well known to increase blood pressure, but it can also cause fatty liver disease by building up fluid in the liver (water retention) and swelling it up. Cutting down on processed is one of the many ways to reduce your salt intake.

Pesticides and heavy metals: Exposure to chemicals in pesticides and heavy metals through vegetables, fruits and adulterated foods and can also damage the liver. These toxins get stored in liver over a lifetime to cause liver damage.

Symptoms of Liver Diseases

  Weakness and fatigue

  Vomiting and nausea

Loss of appetite followed by weight loss

  Right upper quadrant abdominal pain

Yellow discoloration of the skin (jaundice)

These are a few common symptoms of liver damage. However the symptoms may vary due to the root cause. Many times these are mistaken for indigestion and liver damage can go unnoticed, hence, you should be aware of a few things that can damage the liver.
